Moving Calculation Rules with LCM

Life Cycle Management (LCM) is a wonderful tool for archiving, migrating and just plain managing artifacts -- such as outlines, forms, reports, etc. This post isn't a tutorial on how to use LCM (I'll leave that for another day). But it is a keep-this-in-mind post for when you're using LCM to deal with calculation rules.

When you're wanting to extract rules from an application, the most obvious place to look is in your "planning" application group. This is most obvious for two reasons. First, because that's where the rest of the artifacts are typically located. Second (and this is the most insidious), because you can actually observe a reference to your rules there.

Below is a screen shot demonstrating this bold invitation to a dead-end path.

Could it get any worse? The category is even labeled "Calculation Manager Rules" and you see the rules you want! Alas, this isn't where you'll want to grab the rules.

Foundation

The rules actually reside under the Foundation node of the Application Groups. The following screen shot shows that node expanded.

From here, if this is a planning application, expand Planning, drill down to the application and you'll see the Rules artifact node.
